CLE’s senior director of policy, Wendy Tucker is quoted in The 74.
CLE senior director of policy, Wendy Tucker was quoted in Education Week’s article titled “L.A. Agrees to Do More After Failing on Special Education. Could Other Districts Be Next?” on April 29, 2022.
The 74 features Wendy Tucker’s opinion on the presence of police in schools following an incident that resulted in the restraint of a 9 year old student by local police.
In response to state mandates prohibiting local school districts from implementing mask requirements in public K-12 schools, The Center for Learner Equity calls upon state leaders to reverse those decisions and allow districts and local authorities to implement policies that will afford safer, equal access to school for all students, including those with disabilities.
Disproportionate discipline of students with disabilities is a long-running crisis—and with the new rules and considerations around COVID-19, the stakes are even higher. Instead of simply reacting as incidents come up, however, schools have the opportunity to develop proactive discipline policies that serve students during the pandemic and also provide positive structures for the future.
This post explains the victory for COPAA and the disability advocacy community against Secretary DeVos’ decision to delay implementation of the Equity in IDEA regulations. In addition, it highlights the perpetuated disproportionality these regulations will work to eliminate.
