Our Statement Regarding Oklahoma Virtual Charter School Board’s Approval of St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School

Given the Oklahoma Virtual Charter School Board’s decision to approve the charter application of the St. Isidore of Seville Catholic Virtual School, we at the Center for Learner Equity feel it is imperative to reinforce that charter schools are public schools that must be accessible and inclusive for students with disabilities and, we believe, must be non-sectarian. In addition, we want to remind Oklahoma officials, the Archdiocese of Oklahoma, and any others who wish to open public charter schools in Oklahoma or any other state that all students have the right to equal access to every public school choice option offered by the state.

If and when St. Isidore of Seville opens in Oklahoma, we expect the school to be rigorously held accountable for abiding by all constitutionally and legislatively mandated requirements, so that students with disabilities and their families receive an equitable education.
